RULING: The Appellate Court erred in deciding that House's natural life sentence violated the Illinois Constitution - further proceedings are required.

Decided in October 2021, the Illinois Supreme Court concluded that Antonio House failed to provide enough evidence on how adolescent brain development science applied to his specific facts and circumstances to challenge his sentence under the Illinois Constitution. House was 19 years old at the time of the murders for which he was held accountable as a lookout, and received a mandatory natural life sentence. The Court reversed the appellate court’s judgment that entitled House to a resentencing hearing, and instead remanded the case to the circuit court for second-stage post-conviction proceedings to further develop the record.
